Current Affairs 2005 - Statistics (60 items)

Oct 18, 2005 Pot Less of a Cancer Risk Than Tobacco, Study Suggests Marijuana smokers are less likely to contract cancer than cigarette smokers, new research suggests. While cannabis and tobacco smoke are chemically similar, the key difference is that cigarettes contain nicotine, which appears to bolster the cancer-causing properties of tobacco, while cannabis contains tetrahydrocannabinol ( THC, the active ingredient in pot ), which may actually reduce the carcinogenic properties of some chemicals.

[Thousands and thousands of dollars are spent to confirm what thousands and thousands of years of anedoctal evidence tells us - politics is the only reason this plant was ever illegal]
Oct 18, 2005 Health Officers Want Drug Law Changes B.C. public health officers are demanding the government decriminalize drug offences because the war on illicit substances is an abysmal failure. ...They say the laws are based on racism and cultural biases, not evidence of harm, and that the prohibition causes far more damage to health and to society.

Sep 23, 2005 A Green Light To Grow The legal avenues for growing pot legally in B.C. are more convoluted than a corn maze. People with licenses issued by Health Canada to use marijuana for its medicinal benefits not only deal with municipal bylaws and Health Canada regulations, but they have to surrender their personal information to police so they won't get busted.

Sep 19, 2005 Police Losing Battle Over Pot, Says Prof Police are losing the war against pot and it's time to make it legal and regulate the cultivation and use of it, says Eugene Oscapella, an Ottawa University criminology teacher who co-founded the Canadian Foundation for Drug Policy.

Sep 1, 2005 Ontario Hemp Industry Ready For Growth Rising Oil Costs Make Natural Product Viable Alternative

[Think of all the trees world-wide that would probably still be standing if we had been using hemp all along.. just another crime against humanity..]
Jul 25, 2005CN ON: Growing Season Is Here Last year, police seized 104,000 plants across the province and charged 37 people. That number is up significantly from the previous two years, when police seized 78,000 plants in 2003 and 56,000 plants in 2002. In 2000, 89,000 marijuana plants were seized by police and 41 people were charged.

May 29, 2005 Pardon Me? Canadians Are A Larcenous Lot But There Is A Way To Wipe Your Slate Clean Again Few would ever think of Canada as a country of criminals. But at last count, in fact, three million of us were. Which also means most of us know someone with a criminal record, or that if we were to walk into a roomful of Canadians, one in 10 of them would be known, intimately, by the law.

May 27, 2005CN ON: Survey Tells All About Our Kids In addition, one in four students have also tried marijuana.

May 22, 2005 Angel Linked To Grow-Op A Kelowna-area marijuana grow-op bust provides one of the strongest links yet between the Hells Angels and the illegal pot industry, police say.

[It's not so obvious that this article is not about the angels that watch over home cannabis gardens, but it soon beciomes apparent that it is just more propaganda from the boys in blue]
May 20, 2005CN BC: Hydroponics Bylaw Gets Regional Support Three Abbotsford resolutions, including one that could force hydroponics retailers to keep records on customers who may be growing marijuana, were accepted at last week's Lower Mainland Municipal Association general meeting.

[At what point will people resent their rights and privacy being eroded in order to keep a single plant illegal]
May 1, 2005 Border Guards Awash In Sea Of Green B.C. drug smugglers are breaking the law -- and the bank -- when they sneak across the border. An increase in seizures is putting enormous strain on Washington county law enforcement and local officials say they've had enough.

[Canada is responsible for 2% of US pot, so this is just another example of a lost cause...]
May 1, 2005 Cops Find Kids Being Kept In Drug Houses [Are parents who grow legal crops indoors also guilty of exposing their kids to unsafe conditions.. if nothing else, this is just another reason why ALL drugs should be regulated]

May 1, 2005 Grow Ops -- An Inside Look So the question for all Canadians is, How would we have the law separate the Herbs from the Luus? How can organized-crime-driven grow operations be prevented while still allowing Canadians who choose to smoke marijuana--or need to smoke it for medical reasons--to provide for themselves and others without risking jail and a criminal record? In other words, how should the law draw the line between personal choice and those who would criminally exploit us?

Apr 21, 2005 Some MDs Recommending Marijuana For Medical Use As federal lawmakers prepare to pass legislation decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use, Montreal's McGill University Health Centre has issued a study concluding some doctors already are suggesting their patients use cannabis for a variety of medical purposes

Mar 24, 2005 Survey Uncovers Educated Tokers VANCOUVER -- Marijuana users are more likely than non-users to be single, well-educated and earning a decent salary. Just 43 per cent of low-income earners had smoked cannabis, versus 55 per cent of high income earners.

[Will the police include this data in their spins?]
Mar 24, 2005 Editorial: Giving Up The Fight On Pot Not An Option News that British Columbia's indoor pot business is still flourishing is a message to some that it's time to give up the fight over marijuana grow operations. They claim it's a battle that can never be won; that simple surrender is the only option. That's a naive suggestion.

[If people who can think logically and rationally are labeled "naive", than it is just as easy to label those who want to ramp up the war on a non-toxic plant, as morons]
Mar 20, 2005CN BC: Grow-Ops Below BC Average ...B.C.'s average of 1.09 for the number of (grow op) busts per 1,000 people ...

Mar 19, 2005 Is Pot Far More Potent Than in the Past? (Dan Gardner) "When smoking stronger pot, you smoke less and you have less exposure to tars and respiratory irritants,... so in some ways it's worth smoking the best pot you can afford." Mitch Earleywine, professor of psychology, University of Southern California

[Although cannabis in the past may not have been as strong as that grown today, high THC hash was always available that could match or was stronger than today's cannabis, so the it is a moot point]
Mar 15, 2005 Let's Admit It: Pot Prohibition's Failed Pot production in the last seven years has more than tripled -- from an estimated 19,727 kilograms in 1997 to 79,817 kilos in 2003. Last year, more than 25,000 growing operations came to police attention but they investigated fewer than 17,000 and only about half of those were prosecuted.

Looking at cannabis prohibition as a numbers game, it is easy to see prohibition can not work. But this is more of a political game - so the numbers can be ignored.
Mar 12, 2005 Marijuana Is Dangerous, Now and in the Future RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli retracted his statement that the Mayerthorpe tragedy was about marijuana, but the sad reality is that he may have been right the first time.

[They can do all the studies they want, but compared to any pharmaceutical drug, it can never be proved that cannabis is harnful enough to be banned ]
