"Yeah, the '60s are over with," the man growls, "but they forgot to tell them that up in Boulder." Or, apparently, in a good portion of Colorado. Today, hippies aren't supposed to exist; yet, look around, and there they are, the majority of whom had yet to be born when the '60s ended. I'd estimate that nationally, hippies comprise about 10 percent of the population; in Colorado, that figure is probably higher.
We tend to recite the cliche that hippies no longer exist because powerful forces in America want us to think just that. They consider the counterculture a menace to Western civilization, something with no rightful place in today's America.

| Aug 4, 2006 | Extradition Refused In Bedford Pot Case A Quebec judge has shut the door on a U.S. request to extradite 11 residents of the Bedford area of the Eastern Townships to face charges after a massive marijuana bust there last year...
Frank Pappas, a lawyer for Jimmy Kimmell, one of the 11 respondents, said extradition requests from U.S. authorities are granted "99 per cent of the time" by Canadian courts. With 11 such requests turned down in a single shot, he said, "this is a first in Canada."

Report Says The Effects Of Canada's Cannabis Now Rival Those Of Cocaine, Heroin
The increasing potency of marijuana -- spurred on by hydroponic growers in places such as B.C. -- means the world should no longer consider pot a "soft" drug, according to a report released Monday by the United Nations.
"Today, the harmful characteristics of cannabis are no longer that different from those of other plant-based drugs such as cocaine and heroin," Antonio Maria Costa, director of the UN's Office on Drugs and Crimes, said in a written statement.

UNODC World Drug Report 2006 full of scientific insults
In its 2006 World Drug Report, released today, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) struggles to fabricate success stories about the effectiveness of the global drug control regime. Flawed comparisons are constructed with higher opium production levels a century ago, with higher prevalence figures for tobacco, and biased claims are made about cannabis. Martin Jelsma, coordinator of the Transnational Institute’s Drugs & Democracy Programme, after a quick read of the report today, considers it to be “full of scientific insults”.

UNODC Executive Director, Antonio Maria Costa claims that the world is
experiencing a devastating “cannabis pandemic”. This gentleman is the same
person who said we were putting "cannabis oil" on pasta. It was pointed out
that is was hemp oil which is not a sativa product. He didn't know the
difference and appeared not to care. Simply another high paid UN stooge. Isn't
it amazing that the US only supports the UN when they toe the US "drug war"
line.

| Jun 19, 2006 | US Sends 'Harsh' Message To BC Smugglers SEATTLE - A U.S. federal judge who sentenced five B.C. first nations members for marijuana-smuggling advised them to spread the word back home about harsh U.S. penalties.
U.S. District Judge Ricardo Martinez sentenced them Friday to six months in prison and two years of probation for their roles in the smuggling scheme.

Slocan Valley's Patrick Roberts may have lost the fight to prevent Ottawa's involvement in his charges against B.C.'s Pot King Marc Emery, but he is willing to take his battle to the bitter end, even if it means the Supreme Court of Canada. By charging Emery and two accomplices, Michelle Rainey-Fenkarek and Greg Williams, with conspiracy to distribute marijuana seeds, Roberts could have prevented American drug-enforcement officials from charging the trio with the same crimes, thus preventing their extradition to the U.S. to stand trial. The Emery plot thickened when Canada's Federal Attorney General tried to stay Roberts' charges, which would clear the way for extradition. Roberts argued the federal government had no place in the legal battle, as the charges were conspiracy related, not direct drug charges, which would allow for federal intervention.
