| Apr 10, 2006 | Civil Liberties Union Opposes Proposed Amendments A proposed law aimed at locating marijuana grow operations could be a valuable weapon in the battle to drive them from the North Shore, say authorities, but the proposed rule change is also raising hackles among privacy advocates.
If passed Bill 25, The Safety Standards Amendment Act, introduced in the provincial legislature Thursday, will grant municipalities the right to access electricity records of BC Hydro customers without going through the judicial system. Under the proposed law, local governments could then pass on any of that information to their police force for further investigation.

A judge with the Ontario Superior Court later tosses out the charges after expressing criticism of the investigating officer's methods....An Ontario Provincial Police officer identified Nguyen and other Vietnamese Canadian community members through a land title search. He focused on them because of previous incidents of Vietnamese Canadians being involved in grow-ops.

Vandale Smith told a landlord he intended to grow marijuana in the rental home, and was licensed to do so by Health Canada.

The Conservative Party say they will give any Canadians caught selling more than 3 kilograms of marijuana a mandatory 24 months minimum in jail. The Conservatives, who lead the polls in Canada’s general election for next Monday, January 23, have already indicated they want mandatory jail terms for any Canadian growing marijuana.
They promised never to decriminalize marijuana.

| Jan 10, 2006 | Rent-A-Narc Takes Aim at Grow-Ops The cash-for-tips program is the first in North America to seek private donations from companies and individuals to offset the costs of new police officers, Vern Nielsen, the board's vice-president, said Monday.
Starting in July, three new RCMP constables will work exclusively on Crime Stoppers tips that point to drugs and property crimes in the Central Okanagan. Private donors have contributed more than $60,000 to the $250,000 annual cost of the three officers. A public fundraising campaign begins in February to make up the shortfall.
