Oct 4, 2008 | LTE: Pot Smokers Are Uncaring Self-abusers Editor: In response to Travis Erbacher's letter ( The Times, Oct. 1 ), I have this to say: People smoke cannabis to stimulate the brain's emergency production of endorphins, which is triggered by its natural reaction to severe synaptic brain connection damage.

Sep 15, 2008 | Police Use Spin To Help Battle Grow Ops Nelson lawyer, Don Skogstad handles a lot of criminal cases involving marijuana growing operations and says recent police reports of seizing houses and organized crime connections in relation ( to ) marijuana cultivation are simply part of a media spin campaign by the RCMP.

Aug 8, 2008 | Grow-Ops Threat To Environment Outdoor grow-ops can pose an environmental hazard, Martherus said, because of the heavy use of fertilizers and pesticides.
1) The amount of fertilzer from cannabis production is not at levels farmers use. 2) Regulation and control instead of prohibition would alleviate the problem. |
Jul 26, 2008 | That Little Joint Could Kill Your Child, MD Says It's not only those pills in the bathroom cabinet that could kill your child -- it could also the pot left out after a party, Dr. Anna Jarvis told delegates at the 85th annual conference of the Canadian Pediatric Society in Victoria.
Just what we need - m ore fear-mongering ignorance. |
Jul 26, 2008 | Pot Users Have More Adverse Effects: Research Researchers analyzed 31 studies from around the world conducted over the past 40 years and found that while nearly 97 per cent of adverse events were not serious or life-threatening, medicinal marijuana users still have an 86-per-cent increase in the rate of non-serious adverse effects, such as drowsiness and dizziness, compared to non-users.
Compared to advesres effects from pharmacueticals, this is more hype. |
Jul 24, 2008 | Pot: Why Not Legalize It? "What you might call the political economy of drug legalization is a bigger problem than the legalizers seem to grasp," Mr. Kleiman has said. "Either we will have a private industry whose profits depend on creating and maintaining addicts, or we will have a public bureaucracy whose revenues depend on creating and maintaining addicts."
The alcohol industry caters to social iimbibers as well as addicts.. not all users are abusers. |
Jul 17, 2008 | Europe's Approach to Drugs Is More Enlightened ... It's Tougher In 2006, Governor-General Michaelle Jean was hosting Queen Silvia of Sweden during the Swedish royal family's visit to Canada when the topic of illegal drug use came up. The GG told the Queen that Canada is taking an enlightened approach. Instead of punishing users, she said, society needs to be understanding of drug use and assist in reducing harm until the addict is ready to quit.
Alas, the Queen was not impressed. She briskly informed the GG that Sweden takes a hard-line approach, that users are given a choice between treatment and jail, and that Sweden's addiction rates are much lower than Canada's. After that, they changed the subject.

Jul 15, 2008 | Put A Lid On It The most recent Ontario studies have found marijuana use is already at a 30-year peak among adults and very close to that mark for teens. Adult use has climbed steadily from a low of eight per cent to a 2005 level of 14 per cent -and more than 38 per cent among the 18-29 age group. Among students in Grades 7 to 12, the number who smoked at least once in the previous year was 25.6 per cent in 2007, up from 9.9 per cent in 1991.

Jul 8, 2008 | Schools More Vulnerable to Drugs Over the last while, it has been widely accepted by society that a mainstay of the high school system was random drug dog searches. ...Make no mistake, they are in our schools, and they are here to stay because of this ruling.
Although it was widely practiced, there is on evidence that it has been widely accepted. Drugs have been in schools for over 35 years... the ruling means nothing. |
May 28, 2008 | Don't Call It Reefer Madness Prohibition failed because its imposition through a transiently ascendant wave of religious asceticism was inconsistent with democracy and a society in which alcohol generally played a benign role.
And because alcohol in moderation is culturally aligned with enhanced fellowship and animated human interaction, it is therefore a communal as well as an individual good. Conversely, the purpose of marijuana is the alteration of consciousness, an end achieved by a process that thrives in solitude and mental torpor.

May 27, 2008 | Enough Is Enough Is Enough I was very interested last week to see a new crime fighting tool against marijuana grow ops has been developed that will let police know where extra electricity is being directed, even if it is being stolen. That will take a lot of these 'gardens' out of circulation, which is where most of us would like to see gang criminals - out of circulation.

May 27, 2008 | NF: Program Offers Parent Plan To Drug Proof Children Mr. Newman is a master trainer from 'Focus on the Family Canada'. He was in Springdale to teach a group of community leaders to present a program called 'How to Drug Proof Your Kids'. The program began in Australia and has been in Canada since 2002.
He provided the sessions at the Springdale Pentecostal Church the week after the church hosted over 250 youth for a weekend celebration of God's love.
[The religious right spread their tentacles a bit further] |
May 20, 2008 | A Few Brave Souls Can Enact Great Change It's hard to stand up against criminals.
For most of us, that world remains a dark, unknown place that we happily avoid.
We don't want to know drug dealers, and we certainly don't want to experience their lifestyle.

May 17, 2008 | Quit Talking About The 'War On Drugs' While there's no denying Canada's longstanding prohibition of the same substances banned in the U.S., comparing the American 'war on drugs' to drug enforcement in Canada is laughable.
[Correct - it is "War on some people who use some drugs" but that is too long and truthful for a soundbite] |
May 7, 2008 | City Going Too Far Witch hunt. Police state. Overzealous. Heavy handed. All of these terms -- and probably a lot more we couldn't print -- are being used to describe the City of Coquitlam's approach to rooting out marijuana grow operations. ...And before the legalize-marijuana lobby starts writing letters about how the problem could be avoided if pot were legal, we agree.
Pot, however, is not legal. And illegal grow-ops pose a huge fire hazard. That means the inspection approach to shutting down grow-ops is a good thing -- when one key ingredient is factored in: common sense.
[Indoor gardens do not pose significant fire risk] |
Apr 28, 2008 | When Laws Are Held In Contempt, We All Suffer When pro-marijuana advocates gathered in downtown Vancouver recently to smoke pot in defiance of the law, many puzzled citizens wondered why the police took no action against them. ...As John Winter, president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, told The Province editorial board: "In a perfect world, the police would have dealt with them with some severity, but the fact is the police don't have the support of the community."

Apr 26, 2008 | Legislation Now Exists To Win War On Drugs On March 14, 2008, Minister of Public Safety, Stockwell Day, announced $8.9 million in funding over two years under the new National Anti-Drug Strategy. This investment is a major step towards a significant crackdown on illegal drugs in our communities.
The funds will help the RCMP to combat the production and distribution of illegal drugs as well as work to dismantle criminal organizations. ...I am proud to be part of the government that is bringing this much needed help to the communities of Yellowhead.

Mar 16, 2008 | Perils Of Pot Houses - How Owners Get Duped
OTTAWA -- An Ontario couple thought they had found the perfect place to raise their two young children. But, what was to be their dream home, in a safe, tight-knit community, soon turned into a nightmare. They had purchased a former marijuana grow-op.
[How can vegetables and flowers be grown indooors safely, yet cannabis cannot?] |
Mar 6, 2008 | The Cost Of Getting High The UN Office of Drugs and Crime reports that Canada now has the highest proportion of marijuana users in the industrialized world at 16.8% for those between 15 and 64 years of age. Eight percent of youth report using marijuana daily. The most recent Canadian Addictions survey indicates that while youth alcohol-use rates have stayed relatively consistent since 1989, use of marijuana by youth has almost doubled in the same period.

Feb 18, 2008 | Judge's Ruling On Pot Bust A Disgrace Why is it that the rights of criminals and drug dealers are put first? Everyone deserves a fair shake in the court of law, but this is beyond ridiculous. Somehow, the BC Civil Liberties Association thought that Bruce's decision was the right one.
