Rent-A-Narc Takes Aim at Grow-Ops The cash-for-tips program is the first in North America to seek private donations from companies and individuals to offset the costs of new police officers, Vern Nielsen, the board's vice-president, said Monday. Starting in July, three new RCMP constables will work exclusively on Crime Stoppers tips that point to drugs and property crimes in the Central Okanagan. Private donors have contributed more than $60,000 to the $250,000 annual cost of the three officers. A public fundraising campaign begins in February to make up the shortfall. |

Drugs - Let's Talk About Them According to the 2005 Drug Use Among Ontario Students survey, which looked at drug use of the past year among students in Grades 7 to 12, 62 per cent have drunk alcohol, 22.7 per cent report binge drinking and 26.5 per cent have tried cannabis. More than one quarter of students in Grades 7 to 12 report being a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone who had been drinking. And 22 per cent report being a passenger in a vehicle driven by someone who used drugs prior to driving. |

Raid Charge Stayed Mandeep Sandhu, a former executive member of the Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca federal Liberal riding association, was charged with conspiracy to traffic in marijuana in Sept. 2004. His laywer, Richard Peck, confirmed those charges were stayed on or about Nov. 7. Sandhu's cousin, Victoria police Constable Ravinder Singh ( Rob ) Dosanjh, was also charged last Dec. 2004 with obstruction of justice for allegedly counselling Sandhu "make false statements to law-enforcement officials" about the origin of money seized during a police search of his residence. A hearing for three other men charged in connection with the raid is scheduled for Friday in Vancouver. Outdoor Pot Farms A Growing Problem Since the start of 2005, police in Ontario have raided 15 farm-sized pot fields, with each property housing between 7,000 and 24,000 plants. Overall, the Orillia-based OPP Drug Enforcement Section is reporting a 100 per cent increase in the number of plants seized over the past year. Between January and September, officers dismantled more than 600 grow operations and uprooted in excess of 400,000 plants. Seizures in areas surrounding Bancroft, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, and Kincardine are up 600 per cent, Elbers said. Plants cut from the earth by officers wielding hefty steel blades are hauled away by helicopter in massive nets capable of holding 2,500 lbs of the freshly-fallen foliage. Maybe someday those involved in eradication efforts, will actually stop to think of what they are doing/trying to acheive, etc.. and recognize the futility of it all...but when their jobs depend on not understanding, it will be more of the same until critical mass prevails... |

Medical Marijuana Still Not Widely Available: Report The federal government's medical marijuana program doesn't work, the Canadian AIDS Society said in a report released Wednesday. The group's report suggests few users of medical marijuana obtain the drug through official channels. "Over 85 per cent of the people we consulted who used cannabis are currently relying on illegal sources for their supply of cannabis," said Lynne Bell-Isle, who worked on the 18-month project for the society. |
